RAPINO - CHIETI PROVINCE
This small, ancient, town is in the Majelleta mountain area and is the perfect choice for lovers of outdoor activities including nature walks, trekking, winter sports, mountain biking, bird and animal watching. It is 420 metres above sea level and although the town is just outside the National Park, much of the territory is within the Park with areas rising to 1887 metres above sea level. Rapino is perfectly situated between the ski resorts of Passo Lanciano/Mamma Rosa and the nearby beaches of Francavilla al Mare, San Vito and Ortona Marina.
The first traces of habitation date back over 40,000 years with its most famous artefact ‘the goddess of Rapino’ now housed in the archaeological museum La Civitella di Chieti. In medieval times Benedict monks colonized the area and for many centuries Rapino was under the rule of the monastery of San Salvatore a Maiella. The churches display fine examples of religious architecture. The town is now renowned for its past and more recent ceramic production and there is even an associated museum founded in 2003.
