The town lies at 281 metres above sea level and is surrounded by fields growing wheat, beets, sunflowers, vines and moreover olive trees. It has a fascinating and varied history dating to the year 1100 with many historical churches and the Baron’s Palace, formerly a castle, worth visiting.
One of San Martino’s most popular events is the ‘Festa Patronale in onore di San Leo’. It is dedicated to the saint in the local ox cart race – The Carrese. It takes place during the last week of April and the characters include knights, oxen and wagons. The race takes place over 9 kms and starts from the castle track and finishes in front of the church. The oxen are changed half-way through and men on horseback ride alongside the oxen to incite them to run.
The population of 4,769 has access to a wide range of facilities including supermarkets, shops, chemist, banks, post office, bars, restaurants and pizzerias. There is also a weekly market, held each Saturday morning, selling meat, fish, fruit and vegetables.
