PETTORANO SUL GIZIO - L’AQUILA
An ancient, captivating village which is part of the prestigious ‘I borghi più belli d’Italia’ programme. Pettorano sul Gizio nestles at 656 metres above sea level on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Gizio. It grew around the imposing castle which can still be explored. The fortified layout survives today, and the village is rich in churches, ancient buildings, five of the six original gates, the Ducal Palace and beautiful fountains.
During the Middle Ages, it was one of the major access points to the Peligna Valley and an important centre that linked the Adriatic with Naples for the transportation of goods.
The village is between two National Parks so there are plenty of hiking and nature trails to enjoy.
The population of 1,376 has access to restaurants, bars and a small shop. The much larger town of Sulmona is a short drive away, about 10 minutes, and has all amenities.
An interesting event, held in the first week in January is the Polenta Festival (Sagra della Polenta), which is celebration of this ancient traditional dish.
