PRETORO - CHIETI PROVINCE
A delightful village which stands, on a rocky landscape with panoramic views, 560 metres above sea level. The cluster of stone buildings climb up a steep mountainside and Pretoro still retains its appearance of an old Medieval town. It is part of the prestigious club of ‘I Borghi più belli d’Italia’ and strolling through the beautiful little streets of Pretoro’s historic heart never ceases to amaze.
As the village is on a rocky landscape, it does not lend itself to farming but the surrounding forest has meant that a flourishing wooden craft industry has developed. This specialist tradition has been passed through the generations.
The 875 inhabitants have access to food shops, chemist, bank, post office, bars and restaurants.
Pretoro has a Wolf Museum (Museo del Lupo) which displays the traditions that bind the wolf to the territory.
The village is probably most famous for its winter sports and proximity to the ski slopes of Passo Lanciano and La Majelletta. There are also hiking trails that are closeby.
