FARA FILIORUM PETRI - CHIETI PROVINCE
A delightful village located on the edge of the Majella National Park, equidistant from Abruzzo Airport, the Adriatic Coast and ski resort of Passo Lanciano. The centre is situated along the left bank of the River Foro, in an elevated position, 227 metres above sea level.
The village was inhabited in VII century and its perched strategic position made it an important military outpost in the early Middle Ages.
In the past, it became home to various artisans, in particular, dyers and millers, due to the rich presence of water.
One of the most interesting and evocative moments, in the life of the town, is the feast of St. Anthony Abbot which takes place on 16th January, each year. Accompanied by food, wine, fireworks, music and dance, the festival is celebrated when 12 tall bundles of dry reeds (farchie), one for each of the town’s districts, are transported to the central piazza where they are burnt. The origins probably lie in the ancient pagan rituals intended to appease the Gods and soothe the way for the return of Spring.
Fara Filiorum Petri benefits from some small shops, bars and restaurants.
