GESSOPALENA - CHIETI PROVINCE
The old town of Gessopalena rises 654 metres above sea level, on a chalk cliff, to the right of the River Aventino. It affords wonderful views of the eastern Majella. The village was unfortunately abandoned during World War II.
The newer town, known as Terranova, was built further down the hill after much of the ancient settlement was destroyed. The medieval nucleus, however, is now an open-air museum (Museo del Gesso) with some of the most important buildings and skeletons of houses, still evident. There are even rock dwellings, hollowed out in the soft chalk, that remain.
The more modern town has food shops, post office, chemist, bars and restaurants to accommodate the 1,406 inhabitants. There is a weekly market, each Tuesday, for the purchase of local produce.
