Gildone is located at 604 metres above sea level and has a population of 900. It is one of the many lovely hill top villages found in Molise. The town is in a rural community, surrounded by farmers tending olive trees and sheep. There are water buffalo too, their milk used to produce creamy mozzarella.
The area was originally inhabited by the Samnites, which was a civilisation that existed 3 centuries BC. They were often at war with the Romans and evidence of their existence was discovered in an ancient cemetery just outside Gildone.
The town’s amenities include shops, post office, bars and restaurant.
