ISOLA DEL GRAN SASSO D’ITALIA - TERAMO PROVINCE
The historic, fortified village of Isola del Gran Sasso is found on the north-east slopes of the Gran Sasso Massif at an altitude of 415 metres. It occupies a marvellous spot among the foothills of the national park and originally was an island wedged between the River Mavone and the Ruzzi torrent. Walking aound the town it is still possible to view two surviving town gates, sloping walls, arches, a tower and churches although most historical features have mainly been absorbed by later construction works, when houses were built.
The ‘Isola’ basin and surrounding mountains provide an abundant of activities. There are natural features to explore including thundering streams, spectacular waterfalls, glaciers, fascinating flora and fauna. Nearby there are also great hiking trails, renowned mountaineering sites and mountain biking tracks.
The population of 4,759 is well served by many facilities including shops, retaurants, bars, post office and bank.
