Situated at an altitude of 255 metres in the valley of the river Fino, the town of Villamagna has a chequered history dating from Roman times. It has since been ruled by the Normans, Benedictine Monks and Ferdinand I of Naples whilst fending off invasions by Saracens and Turks.
The Porta da Capo is a beautiful, ancient gateway to the historical centre and there are several imposing buildings including the parish church of S. Maria Maggiore (XVIII century) with the adjacent former Palazzo Vescovile and the ancient church of S. Francesco.
Much of the area, surrounding the town, is used for growing grapes and Villamagna received its DOC appellation in 2011. It even has its own cantina where you can taste and buy.
